The Background of Bashavia Creek Preserve
When 127 acres of land near Pfafftown went up for sale in December 2023, Drs. Peter and Ann Weigl were concerned that the land would become a new housing development. The couple, who had lived near the land for nearly 50 years, bought and gifted the land to the Piedmont Land Conservancy (PLC) to prevent its development.
- Why it matters: This area in Pfafftown is experiencing growth due to Winston-Salem’s planned Northern Beltway. What could have been a new development is now preserved greenspace for generations.
The Land of Bashavia Creek Preserve
The property is partially farmland and includes a historic farmhouse dating back to 1853. The rest of the property is wooded hillsides, with Bashavia Creek running through the valley.
- The location: The preserve is only 20 minutes from downtown Winston-Salem, in the Pfafftown area of Northwest Forsyth County, off Kilmurry Hill Rd.
When Will Bashavia Creek Preserve Open?
PLC estimates the preserve will open to the public in 2025 or 2026. Before opening Bashavia Creek Preserve, PLC will complete restoration projects, build hiking trails, and construct a parking area.
