Coffeehouse and Taproom “Lot 63” Opens in Old Salem

Updated March 21, 2024

Did you know Old Salem was founded by Moravians in 1766? The historic district is one of the must-see spots in Winston-Salem, allowing visitors to step two centuries into the past.

But even in the heart of the city’s oldest district, a new gathering place is set to make its mark: coffeehouse and taproom “Lot 63” opens in Old Salem, breathing fresh life into the Moravian tradition.

The Menu

  • A variety of coffee drinks, including its signature latte, the “Lot 63.” The drink is made with Moravian Spice Cookie syrup, which team member Christy says tastes just like the iconic treat.
  • Lot 63’s coffee is sourced from FosterHobbs Coffee in High Point, and its tea comes from Chad’s Chai, a local teahouse in the Arts District.
  • After 11 AM, you can enjoy tap beers from Radar Brewing Company, canned domestics, German imports (a nod to Lot 63’s Moravian roots), and wine from around the world. The taproom also serves sodas and sparkling water.
  • If you’re hungry, there are plenty of delicious treats to enjoy! You’ll find classics from Wilkerson’s Bakery, like its famous Moravian cookies and cheese straws. Lot 63 will also serve exclusive items, like sweet and savory soft pretzels, gourmet cookies, and a rotating selection of baked goods.

The History

  • Two years ago, a group of young Moravians began dreaming about creating a space where friendships and community could be formed. The perfect opportunity arose when the Moravian Book and Gift Store closed in March 2023, and a few months later, Lot 63 was born!
  • Lot 63 truly blends the past and the present. Its beautiful bar is made of wood from an old barn in Bethania (another Moravian settlement in Winston-Salem). Its furniture comes from Shiloh General Store, an Amish store past Yadkinville, and even the walls feature art from the Salem Archives!

The Space

  • Lot 63 is a great place to meet up with friends old and new. The cozy interior has seating for 50 people, with a long table in the back perfect for large gatherings. On pleasant North Carolina days, you can head outdoors for a pet-friendly seating area shared with Muddy Creek Cafe.
  • For events, the main room can accommodate up to 111 people, and the entire space (interior, basement, and outdoor) can accommodate 170 people.
  • Next Steps: In the coming months, venture downstairs and you’ll find a retail space featuring goods from Wilkerson’s Bakery, Camel City Goods, and a rotating selection of goods and merchandise from local artisans.

The Details

  • Lot 63 is located at 614 S Main St. and plans to be open Sunday to Thursday, 7 AM – 9 PM and Friday to Saturday, 7 AM – 11 PM.
