What is the Winston-Salem Open?

The Winston-Salem Open serves as the last Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour 250 event prior to the US Open. It features top tennis players from over 15 countries, and this year’s event includes 12 of the top 50 players in the world.

  • Familiar Faces: Previous winners appearing on the court this year include Lorenzo Sonego (’24), Sebastian Baez (‘23), and Roberto Bautista Agut (‘17).

 

The Background of the Winston-Salem Open

The tournament used to be held in New Haven, Connecticut, where it was known as Pilot Pen Tennis. When the tournament relocated to Winston-Salem, it was renamed and became a completely new tournament. The city has hosted the event every year since 2011.

Zoom in: The Winston-Salem Open has a significant impact on the city. Here are the stats for the 2024 tournament:

  • Hosted over 30,000 fans
  • Donated $20,000 to Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools’ middle school athletic programs
  • Donated $5,000 to local community tennis associations
