Where to Dance in Winston-Salem: Best Dance Lessons & Social Dance Events

Chaos Crew Line Dancing

Background: Jackie Philips and Maggie Shipley are the Chaos Crew! They met through one of Jackie’s dance classes and began working together in 2022.

Get Involved: You can find the Chaos Crew teaching line dancing at various venues around town, including East of Texas and Radar Brewing. Jackie and Maggie also have classes they teach separately.

  • What to Expect: Beginner line dancing lessons for the first hour, followed by open dance. No registration is required; depending on the event, it may be free or require a $5 cover fee.

 

Favorites: Jackie loves dancing to “Wave On Wave” by Pat Green, and Maggie loves “Swing City” by Roger Brown!

 

Real World Ballroom

Background: MaryAnn Molloy opened Real World Ballroom in 2021. A longtime ballroom dancer, she first began to teach dance in Raleigh in 2017.

Get Involved: Real World Ballroom offers classes at their studio at 690 Jonestown Road. You can sign up for single classes or purchase tiered membership plans.

  • What to Expect: A variety of dance styles: ballroom, Latin, swing (West & East Coast/Lindy), and tap. Most classes are geared toward beginners, but the instructors will adapt to the group’s skill level.

 

Bonus: Real World Ballroom also offers wedding dance lessons!

 

SonCaribe Latin Dance

Background: Luis De La Cruz started SonCaribe Latin Dance in April 2021 to reestablish a sense of community after the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally from the Dominican Republic, he loves sharing his passion for dance and Latino culture.

Get Involved: SonCaribe Latin Dance hosts monthly dance lessons/socials at the Coal Pit and Art For Art’s Sake (AFAS). Registration is not required to attend, but there is a $10 cover fee. You can also take classes at the studio at 630 N Liberty Street!

  • What to Expect: Luis teaches multiple dance styles, such as salsa, bachata, merengue, cha-cha, cumbia, and kizomba. Classes at his studio are taught at various skill levels in 8-week cycles.
    • Note: Although students don’t have to sign up for all the classes in a cycle, participation is locked after the third week.

 

Extra: Luis’s favorite dance style is salsa! He’s also partial to bachata and merengue since both dance styles originated in the Dominican Republic.

 

Best of Ballroom

Background: Laura Stainback started Best of Ballroom with Ranko Bogosavac in 2017. She loves how dance can reduce stress and bring joy to people.

Get Involved: Best of Ballroom offers classes at their studio at 644 Hanes Mall Boulevard.

  • What to Expect: A wide variety of dances, including foxtrot, waltz, tango, rumba, cha-cha, swing, and many others.

 

Bonus: Several of their students and instructors dance in competitions around the country and the world!
