Graylyn Estate Named #5 Best Boutique Hotel in USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards

Graylyn Estate, a historic estate in Winton-Salem, has been recognized as the #5 Best Boutique Hotel in the USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards for 2023.
This historic estate, constructed in the late 1920s, offers guests a delightful stay with charming rooms and daily servings of Mrs. Gray’s delectable butterscotch cookies. Guests can also enjoy the tranquil outdoor pond and try their hand at fishing with the provided equipment. In addition, the estate is a popular venue for weddings, corporate events, and special occasions, boasting a total of 85 guest rooms.
USA Today highlighted the availability of around-the-clock butlers, ensuring that guest needs are promptly attended to. The article likened the hotel to Winston-Salem’s very own “Downton Abbey.”

The History
The Graylyn Estate, formerly the country estate of Bowman and Nathalie Gray, is located near downtown Winston-Salem. When the Gray family moved into the Manor House in 1932, it became one of the largest in North Carolina, second only to the Biltmore House.
In 1946, the estate was gifted to the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University and functioned as an academic hospital until 1959. The Gray family repurchased the estate in the 1970s and subsequently donated it to Wake Forest University. Following renovations, the Graylyn International Conference Center opened in 1984 and was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
Over the years, the estate has undergone various renovations, restorations, and expansions. In 2016, Graylyn Estate was honored as a member of the Historic Hotels of America.
